Sylvia Torres is a native Californian and full time contemporary artist working in combination of the ancient medium of encaustic and mixed media.
Ms. Torres gravitated to painting at a very early age, painting to the beat of her inner drummer. She survived the stern tutelage of her artist-grandfather, a realist, and continued to paint pink tractors in purple fields. She was always drawn to the emotion of the paint and joyful soul of the work.
Torres became a graphic artist and was an art director in advertising for many years. Then she switched to the other side of the art table, and sold commercial printing for several more years. At just the right moment, she abandon this career and returned to fine art, working in oils and acrylic.
And then encaustic found her. Torres traveled to New York, and trained at R&F Paints where encaustic paints are made, and encaustic painters are born.
Torres’ work has been widely exhibited throughout Ventura County, as well as La Jolla, Laguna Beach, Santa Fe and other locations. She is a past Artist-In- Residence at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, CA, as well as a member of their Board of Directors. She has taught workshops at Studio Channel Islands Art Center and at Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, CA. She was part of the Carnegie’s Master Art Workshops. Other affiliations have included memberships on the Buenaventura Art Association in Ventura, CA, and Friends Of The Arts, an organization that raises funds for scholarships for promising art students at Ventura College.
The Ventura Music Festival has presented her work in their annual visual arts invitational exhibitions, most recently during their Sixteenth Concert Season, a successful celebration and collaboration of visual art and music.
